| The UCULeft
is a national organisation of University and College Union activists. It is committed to ensuring that the new union has a democratic structure through which members can determine policy, and elected officers and professional officials can be held accountable. It seeks to defend educational equality, and to oppose the consequences of neo-liberal marketisation. It is opposed to all forms of racism, sexism, oppression and imperialism. |

| The conference was a great success with over 220 people attending from 77 institutions
in England, Scotland and Wales (26 pre-92, 21 post-92, and 30 FE colleges were represented). After a day of debate, on a variety of
issues confronting the new union, the Conference, moved, voted on and passed the following statment. |

1. This conference agrees to develop UCULeft as a national organisation of UCU activists. The organisation will be committed to ensuring that the new union has a democratic structure through which members can determine policy and elect representatives at all levels of the union to ensure their accountability. 2. The organisation will further: - campaign inside the union for effective and sustained industrial action where necessary to improve pay and conditions; - seek to defend the principle of free universal education under democratic control of education workers, local communities and users to oppose the neo-liberal marketisation of our colleges and universities; - campaign vigorously for the union to oppose all forms of racism, sexism, oppression, war and imperialism and to propose full equality of educational opportunities and employment rights in educational institutions; 3. This conference agrees to call a further conference in the Autumn term 2006 to: - discuss and adopt ongoing political priorities for the organisation; - agree a draft constitution and membership criteria; - develop an electoral strategy for the left in UCU; - develop a strategy for the democratisation of the new structures of UCU, proposing any necessary changes to that end in the current Constitution and Rules; - establish a publication which will promote the interests and influence of left activists in UCU. 4. This conference agrees to elect an interim steering group to take the new organisation through to the Autumn conference, work on the above agenda, and produce any necessary interim rank and file publications, leaflets and a newspaper for the beginning of the next academic year. The Autumn Conference will agree a set of principles, define the membership and agree to elect officers. |
